Nature Stewards
Program & Host Organization
Nature Stewards is delivered by the Environmental Youth Alliance, a not-for-profit organization focused on land-based education and ecological engagement. The program supports youth in developing environmental knowledge, stewardship skills, and community connections through hands-on learning in natural spaces.
Location & Scope
The initiative operates in British Columbia, Canada. Activities take place in person at a community garden, with programming delivered across three seasonal cycles each year.
Who It Serves
The program serves youth ages 14 to 18 who identify as Indigenous, Black, People of Colour, 2SLGBTQIA+, living with a disability, or from other equity-denied communities. It centers young people who have been historically marginalized in environmental and educational systems.
Climate & Mental Health Focus
Nature Stewards addresses the mental health impacts of climate change by engaging youth in land-based activities that build resilience, foster belonging, and support emotional coping. The program integrates themes of sustainability, climate action, ecological knowledge, and social connection.
Activities & Format
Participants meet weekly for four-hour sessions held from 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Activities include facilitated group dialogue, reflective exercises, creative projects, outdoor stewardship tasks, educational presentations, and opportunities for mindfulness and nature-based engagement. The model combines consistent cohort participation with flexible attendance, allowing some youth to join occasionally.
